Eagles Class- Year 6

Welcome to the 2024-2025 academic year!

Autumn 1 2024

Welcome back everyone! I hope you all had a great Summer. Welcome to Year 6. I am looking forward to an action packed year of learning. It is such an exciting time to be a Year 6. I, Mr Ashburn, will be Year 6 teacher this year and I am privileged to be teaching your child. I look forward to meeting you and your child as the year progresses.

Year 6 is such an exciting year and the final one in your child’s primary school education. We have trips, sports festivals and residentials to look forward to. Please take a look at the class newsletter and parent information links below, which will give you more information about what we will be learning in Year 6 during Autumn 1 and some important information for you as parents. In the meantime, take care and I hope to catch up with you all soon.

Mr Ashburn

Summer Term 2

Welcome to the second half of the Summer Term. We have got lots going on including Bikeability, Kendal College cooking, cricket coaching, sports festivals and our extended visit to Great Tower. We have lots to look forward to in this final term. Below, are some pictures of our Bikeability sessions.

Kendal College Sports Afternoon

What a brilliant afternoon of sport we have had today! Kendal College very kindly planned and delivered an amazing sports afternoon for the whole school. The children loved participating in a range of different events from sprinting, skipping and bean bag contests to egg & spoon, sack and the three-legged races, all under a brilliant blue sky and perfect conditions. Once again, a massive thank you to Kendal College for delivering such a memorable event. Your students were a pleasure to work with. We look forward to our Sports Day on Thursday 20th June, which promises to be another wonderful afternoon of sport.

Kendal College Baking

Year 6 thoroughly enjoyed an afternoon of cooking chocolate brownies at Kendal College in June. So many skills were learnt and practised such as: weighing, mixing ingredients, following instructions and tidying up! Thank you to Kendal College, Sam Pollitt and Mrs Kay for organising a memorable afternoon.

Bikeability

Year 6 completed Bikeability training in June. The children learnt skills such as how to fit their helmet correctly, signalling, manoeuvring and how to ride a bike safely; all incredibly important skills. Well done to all the children and thank you to our instructors Cat and Mike.

Catholic Life: Stations of the Cross 2024

Year 6 took part in a Stations of the Cross event staged in the school hall, where each class had to represent a Station of the Cross. Our station was Jesus dies on the cross. This station was represented through artwork and diary writing in English and RE.

Big Walk and Wheel 2024

Thank you to all the children and parents who took part in the Big Walk and Wheel initiative over the last 2 weeks. The purpose of the Walk and Wheel is to encourage children and parents to be active, as well as to help the environment by reducing vehicle emissions.

Considering the weather hasn’t been great, 696 journeys were logged either on foot, cycling or scooting. This is an amazing effort, so well done to everyone who took part.

Class Results:

1st Year 6 Eagles- 60%

2nd Year 5 Kingfishers- 53%

3rd Year 2/3 Finches- 49%

PE: Cumbria Cross Country Championships 2024

Well done to Elodie and Charlie who represented Dean Gibson and the South Lakes at the Cumbria Cross Country Championships at Hunter Hall School in Penrith. Elodie finished 19th and Charlie finished 20th. What an amazing achievement!

Science: Exploring Electricity

This week we had great fun making and exploring electrical circuits in Science. After learning the correct symbols and component names, we investigated using different components in our circuits and the effect this had on how each component worked. Everyone was so engaged and enjoyed their learning in this lesson.

Catholic Life: Year 6 Class Mass

Father Hugh led a very reverent and reflective class mass with the theme of Peace and Catholic Solidarity this morning. We listened to Bible readings, engaged in prayer and sang hymns.

PE: Cricket Coaching

Year 6 have been enjoying participating in cricket coaching provided by Cumbria Cricket Association and the Chance to Shine scheme. The children have been learning the key skills of cricket such as batting, bowling and fielding. The sessions will run until February half-term. Well done to all the children involved for improving their cricket skills and making such good progress!
